התפרצות הר הגעש באיסלנד ב-2010 שיתקה את אירופה, הורגשה בכל העולם ועלתה מיליארדים. יותר מכל היא המחישה עד כמה אנו תלויים בתחבורה אווירית. יותר מכל כלי תחבורה אחר, התעופה האזרחית היא זו אשר "כיווצה" את העולם ולה חלק חשוב בתהליכי הגלובליזציה. ב-50 השנים האחרונות התחבורה האווירית צמחה כל שנה והתחזית היא שצמיחה זו גם תימשך לפחות ב-20 השנים הבאות. הפיתוחים הטכנולגיים בייצור מטוסים הביאו לירידה משמעותית בעלות הטיסה ולשינויים מבניים בסקטור זה אשר כיום הוא מנוהל על פי שיקוליים מסחריים ולרוב ע"י הסקטור הפרטי למרות שהוא עדין כבול בהסכמים אשר נחתמו בועידת התעופה הראשונה ב-1944. הקורס בגיאוגרפיה של תעופה ינתח את תעשיית התחבורה האווירית העולמית ויבחן את מאפייניה העיקריים תוך התמקדות בחשיבותה הכלכלית מחד והשפעותיה השליליות על הסביבה מאידך. נושאים הקשורים לתחרות בין חברות תעופה ובין שדות תעופה, רשתות הטיסה של חברות התעופה, התפתחות חברות התעופה ה"זולות" (low-cost), ורגולציה יסקרו בשיעורים השונים על מנת לנתח ולהבין את ההשפעות המרחביות של פעילות התחבורה האווירית.
הקורס כולל סיור (השתתפות חובה) באחד מימי חמישי של הסמסטר.

Geography of air transport
(Requirement: "An introduction to Economic Geography")
The volcanic ash cloud over Europe in 2010 which disabled Europe, was felt across the world and cost billions emphasized how dependent our life has become on air transport. More than any other mode of transport, it is air transport that has “shrunk” the world and it has also played an important part in globalisation processes. Over the last 50 years, air transport grew every year and the forecast is that this growth path will continue, at least in the next 20 years. It is the technological development in aircraft that has brought significant reduction in the cost of flying and to structural changes in air transport that today is run largely under commercial considerations and by the private sector although it is still regulated and controlled in various ways by the public (planning) sector. The course in the Geography of Air Transport will analyse the air transport industry and will examine its main characteristics, focusing on its economic contribution and importance on the one hand and its adverse environmental impact on the other. Main issues covered will include airline and airport competition, airline networks and the emergence of the low-cost airlines, in order to understand and analyse the spatial implications of air transport activity.
The course includes a mandatory field trip on a Thursday during term time.
