Course description The seminar will examine the intimate reciprocal influences and the reflexive relationships between religious doctrines and rituals - and literature, poetry, and performing arts in traditional Japan, from ancient times to the Edo period. The seminar will study various religious literary and poetical works, their authors, the circumstances of their creation, and their ritual dimensions. In addition, the seminar will investigate the influence of religious thought on familiar literary and poetic works that are not necessarily "religious", and explore how these works reflect the teachings and beliefs of their times. Special attention will be given to the performative status of literature and poetry in traditional Japan, as to the performing arts as instructors of doctrine and upholders of worldview. Through the various works, the seminar will discuss the question of definition of conceptual categories - like "religion", "art", "theatre" or "ritual" - vis-a-vis the blurred boundaries between them.
