Course description This course will explore the transformations of one amongst the ancient literary genres in Western culture. We’ll discuss problems such as: how does the concept of the tragic apply to both collective and individual events, experiences and feelings? What ethical and political questions are bound with the aesthetics of the genre? What interaction between literature and life does the relation between the philosophical problem of the Tragic and the literary genre of Tragedy engender? The course is divided into four themes: The Politics of Greek Tragedy; The Death of Tragedy and the Birth of Modernity; The Tragic Subject (1): Constitution of the Self; The Tragic Subject (2): Gender and Sexuality. Readings of select tragic works will be complemented by detailed discussion of theoretical texts by authors such as: Plato and Aristotle, Hegel, Nietzsche, Butler, Benjamin and Agamben.
