הקורס יתחקה אחר ההיסטוריה, התרבות והחברה היהודית בארה"ב, מהקהילות הראשונות ועד ימינו באמצעות הרצאות, קריאת מאמרים ודיון במקורות. בנוסף לעיסוק בשינויים החברתיים, הדתיים והתרבותיים בקרב יהודי אמריקה, נבחן את נקודות המפגש בין התרבות היהודית לבין התרבות האמריקאית, את חוויותיהם של יהודי אמריקה לעומת קבוצות מיעוט אחרות וכן שאלות רבות נוספות. חובות הקורס: השתתפות פעילה (כולל נוכחות קבועה), הגשת תרגילים, ועבודת בית.
Course description
The Jews in America: History, Society and Culture, 1654 - 2017
This class will use lectures, reading materials and primary sources to examine the history, society and culture of Jews in the United States from the earliest communities to the present day. In addition to discussion on social, religious and cultural developments among Jews, the course will also highlight points of intersection between Jewish and American cultures, the experience of Jews in relations to other minority groups and other questions.
Requirements: Active participation (including regular attendance), reading assignments, take home work.
