ערים קיימות כבר למעלה מחמשת אלפים שנה. מהמהפכה העירונית באלף הרביעי לפנה"ס ועד ערי הענק של המאה ה-21, העירוניות מהווה חוויה אנושית מעצבת מרכזית בעולמנו. מטרת הסמינר לבחון את התפתחות ההביטוס העירוני ומאפייניו, מערכות קשרים חומריים ותרבותיים, והתעצבות מרחב עירוני וזהות עירונית, דרך פרקטיקות של תעביר תרבותי.
במסגרת הסמינר נדון במגוון המאפיינים הפיזיים, המעשיים והרעיוניים של העירוניות. נבחן את הולדת הרעיון העירוני, התפשטותו במרחב והמשכיותו לאורך זמן, דרך תהליכים של תעביר תרבותי ובין-דורי, חדשנות, אימוץ, שינוי והתאמה, אשר הביאו להבניית אורח החיים העירוני במקומות שונים ובתקופות שונות. נשלב ניתוח נתונים מתחומי הארכיאולוגיה, הגיאוגרפיה והסוציולוגיה, עם גישות מתודולוגיות ותיאורטיות ממגוון דיסציפלינות. נדון בהופעתן של הערים הראשונות ובשינויים מרחיקי הלכת שחלו באורח החיים במעבר מן הכפר לעיר. נבחן את מידת השפעתו של אורח החיים העירוני, כפי שהתעצב לפני אלפי שנים, על העירוניות בתקופות הבאות. נסקור את תולדות התפתחות הערים ותפיסות עירוניות, והיבטים שונים של תכנון עירוני. נחקור את משמעות החוויה העירונית ואת השפעתה על מגוון היבטים בחיי היומיום של תושבי הערים. נשאל כיצד גלובליזציה תרבותית משנה משמעויות של מקומות וחוויות אנושיות במרחב העירוני. ונעלה לבחינה מחודשת את ההגדרות השונות של תופעת העירוניות ושל יישובים עירוניים.

Urbanism and Urban Habitus

Cities exist for over five thousand years. From the urban revolution of the 4th millennium BCE to the big metropolis of the 21st century, urbanism is a central formative experience in our world. The seminar aims to examine the development of urban habitus and its characteristics, material and cultural networks, and the forging of urban space and urban identity, through practices of cultural transfer.
We will discuss the physical, practical and conceptual characteristics of urbanism. We will consider the birth of urban concept and its spread across space and continuity across time through processes of cultural and inter-generational transfer, innovation, acceptance, transformation and adaptation, that led to structuring urban lifestyle in different areas and periods. We will combine analysis of archaeological, geographical and sociological data, with methodological and theoretical approaches from various disciplines. We will discuss the emergence of the first cities, and the far-reaching changes in the transition from rural to urban way of life. We will examine the influence of urban lifestyles and habitus shaped thousands of years ago on urbanism in later periods. We will review the history and development of urban settlements and concepts, and various aspects of urban planning. We will explore the meaning of urban experience, and its effect of different aspects in everyday urban life. We will ask how cultural globalization transforms meanings of places and human experiences in urban spaces. And we will reconsider the different definitions of urbanism and urban settlements.
