"Science and Religion have always been in conflict". This dictum, common in popular culture, was first explicitly defended towards the end of the nineteenth century by the American polymath John W. Draper in his book A History of the Conflict between Science and Religion. In this course we shall deal with the cultural, political and institutional contexts in which the so-called "conflict thesis" emerged. Rather than focusing on whether there was (or is) such a conflict, we shall focus on the reasons why the thesis of an overall conflict became important. At stake were the evolving notions of "science", of "religion", but also power struggles of new ideologies and institutions to gain legitimacy in the public sphere. We shall closely read and discuss some of the most significant texts that contributed to the construction of the conflict thesis in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, so as to also understand the current status quo of the battle in contemporary Western societies.
