שיעור זה חוקר את תולדות המדינה העת'מאנית מראשית ימיה במאה ה-14 ועד להקמת הרפובליקה התורכית ב-1923. תוך כדי בחינת תולדותיה הכרונולוגיות של האימפריה, ינתח השיעור מוסדות, אישים, אירועים, מבנים כלכליים, ודפוסי תרבות וחברה. סוגיות שונות שייבחנו כוללות: הקמת האימפריה, שושלת בית עת'מאן, הצבא העות'מאני וכיבושיו, דפוסי אסלאם ודתות שונות באימפריה, המנגנון האגרארי-ניהולי, ארכיטקטורה ואסתטיקה, אתגרים חיצוניים ופנימיים, תקופות שונות של רפורמות, ושינויי המאה ה-19 הארוכה. לצד ההרצאות, ילווה השיעור בקריאת טקסטים היסטוריים והיסטוריוגרפיים כתובים ובבחינת איורים, מפות, חפצים, מבנים וחומרים נוספים.דרישות קורס
נוכחות בהרצאות כל שבוע מאד מומלצת. חובה לקרוא את הביבליוגרפיה (רצוי משבוע לשבוע). יינתנו במהלך הסמסטר חמישה תרגילים לציון בממשק מודל. התרגילים יתבססו על החומר הנלמד בשיעורים ועל חומר הקריאה. מתוך 5 תרגילים, הממוצע של 4 הציונים הגבוהים בתרגילים ייחשב כ-20% מן הציון הסופי בקורס. המבחן הסופי יהיה בסגנון אמריקאי וייחשב כ-80% מן הציון הסופי.
Course description
This course explores the history of the Ottoman state from its beginnings in the 14th century through its transformation into the Republic of Turkey in 1923. Using a chronological framework for this investigation, the course considers institutions, people, events, economic structures, and cultural and social forms and patterns. Issues to be studied include the rise of the Ottomans; the Ottoman dynasty; the nature of Ottoman military formation and its accomplishments; the varied aspects of Islam in the empire; the agrarian-administrative system; architecture and aesthetics; external and internal challenges to Ottoman state and society; the impetus to reform; and the long 19th century. In addition to the lectures, the course includes assigned readings in history and historiography, images, maps, material objects, buildings and more.
Course requirements
Regular attendance at the weekly lectures is strongly recommended. It is required to do the reading for the course, preferably from week to week. During the course, five graded exercises will be assigned through the Moodle online teaching plaform. From the five, the average of the four highest grades will be calculated as 20% of the final grade. The final exam will be a multiple-choice (“American-style”) exam and will be calculated as 80% of the final grade.
