תיאור הקורס:
מושג "התינוק" בתרבות הוא הקובע את מנהגי גידול התינוקות בחברה, ולא "מציאות אובייקטיבית" כלשהי. בקורס נבדוק דגמים (מודלים) תרבותיים שונים של גידול תינוקות באמצעות קריאה ביקורתית במגוון של מקורות. נעקוב אחר גלגוליו של מושג "התינוק" מאז הופעתו של מושג "הילד" המודרני הראשון בתרבות המערבית, הן בחתך היסטורי והן בחתך השוואתי בין תרבויות. בין היתר, נשאל מדוע חשוב כל כך שתינוקות הולנדיים יעשו קקי בזמן קבוע כל יום, והאם יועצות שינה לתינוקות היו מצליחות כלכלית גם ביפן? לצד הדיון בתינוק כמושג היסטורי בתרבות ייבחנו גם אספקטים מדעיים אחרים: אנתרופולוגיים, ביולוגיים, פסיכולוגיים ועוד. במסגרת הקורס יבצעו התלמידים תצפיות מחקריות עצמאיות.

Cultural Aspects of Raising Babies

The customs of raising babies in any given society are determined by the cultural Concepts said society holds about babies – not by any “objective reality”. This course will look into different cultural models of raising babies through juxtaposing various sources and researches. We shall follow the development of the term “baby” ever since its first appearance of the modern concept of “the child” in Western culture, both historically and across cultures. Among other things, we’ll ask why was it so important for Dutch babies to poop at the same time every day, and would sleep consultants succeed financially in Japan? Alongside the discussion of The Baby as an historical concept in culture, we will also analyze other scientific aspects, such as anthropological, biological, psychological etc. The students will perform small observation research projects during the semester.
