Gender and Modern History

How did current representations of masculinity and femininity develop throughout history? Why were men and women required to fulfill different tasks in the work place, the family, the army and even in friendship through the 19th and 20th century? What is the history of the struggle for gender equality? What is the history of different attitudes towards sexuality? How were homosexuality and heterosexuality constructed historically in modern times? What is the history of gender relations in the West?
Historians of gender offer new, groundbreaking, and thought-provoking ways for understanding the past. This survey course (150 students) studies modern European history from the perspective of gender studies. We will examine men and women's lives and what gender came to represent in different periods and cultures. This course looks at gender and the major transformations in European politics, culture, philosophy, economy in modern times. Topics will include: gender and industrialization; the rise of modern ideologies; the rise of mass culture and consumerism; the rise of the human sciences; the development of modern sexuality; the development of democracy, fascism and communism; the world wars and the postwar period.
