REMOTE SENSING TO MONITOR AIR POLLUTION
Dr. ALEXANDRA CHUDNOVSKY
Course objectives: Learn about air pollution sources, pollutant properties, transport and fate. Develop critical skills in: searching, archiving, evaluating, analyzing and applying information presented in current scientific and professional literature, to provide students with a conceptual and practical applications of Remote Sensing (RS) to monitor air pollution including: The fundamental characteristics of electromagnetic radiation and how the energy interacts with Earth surface materials; different approaches/algorithms to retrieve aerosols, sensors MODIS, MISR, GOES, the relationship/connection between satellite aerosol retrievals and ground observations of particulate matter (PM2.5/PM10), impact of climate change on air pollution, algorithms to monitor gaseous pollution from space, AERONET.
Lab and Homework
Lectures, individual home work assignments, lab, including class presentation of each student on a selected topic which will be summarized in a written work and submitted at the end of semester. Attendance to both lecture and lab is required in the normal circumstances and forms a portion of your grade.
