האדם ופעילותו במרחב אחראים במידה רבה לשינוי מתמיד של הסביבה וצביונה. ברובו, תהליך זה מונחה ומכוון התכתיב האנושי, שמושפע במידה רבה על ידי תופעות, תהליכים ושחקנים פוליטיים, כמו למשל המדינה. כיצד מעצבת הסביבה הגיאוגרפית תפישות ותהליכים פוליטיים וכיצד משפיעים תהליכים פוליטיים על דמותה של הסביבה אלה השאלות המרכזיות המעסיקות את הגיאוגרפיה המדינית. לברור סוגיות אלה יעסוק הקורס בהתפתחות ההגות העיונית בתחום, באופייה וטבעה של מדינת הלאום, בשאלת הריבונות, מעמד הטריטוריה וגבולות המדינה, במאבק על משאבים חוצי גבולות, בתמורות המתחוללות במערכת הפוליטית הגלובלית ובהשפעותיה על מדינת הלאום. הקורס יעסוק עוד בהיבטים בסיסיים של גיאוגרפיה כלכלית פוליטית. The course introduces the geographic patterns of nations; geographic factors affecting the background and present development of countries. The course objectives: To trace the evolution of geopolitical ideas; to understand the development of group identities such as the nation and examine the linkages between these identities and the political organization of territory; to develop an appreciation for the effects of boundaries on economic, political and social processes and to identify the political and economic forces undermining the modern nation-state system.
