ההגדרות התרבותיות של נשיות, גבריות והיחסים בין אלה הם מעמודי התווך של הסדר החברתי. התיאורטיזציה הנרחבת של תחום המגדר מתייחסת למבנים פטריארכליים כמאפיין אוניברסלי המאפשר ישום של תיאוריות שנוסחו במערב גם במחוזות לא מערביים. סמינר זה יבחן את המצע התיאורטי של לימודי המגדר בהקשרים הודיים, ויבקש לעמוד על קווי ההלימה, ומעבר לכך גם על מאפיינים ומבנים הודיים אשר עשויים להאיר מחדש ואף לאתגר צמתים והנחות יסוד בחקר המגדר. דגש מיוחד יופנה לבחינת זירות המגדר והמיניות בעידן המודרני, שבו מבנים מסורתיים מתערערים ומובנים מחדש, וכן לאמצעי הייצוג השונים המאפשרים פלטרפומה לניסוחם של אידיאלים מבוססים וחדשים גם יחד. Gender Studies – Between India and the West
Gender studies formulated in the West have acquired multicultural clout because of the patriarchal structure of most societies. This graduate seminar seeks to think and rethink the universality of gender theories and key concepts and refine this discourse by examining Indian notions of gender as expressed in various constructs, products and texts composed under Colonial rule, in nation-building eras, in the first decades of independence and in response to the recent challenges of globalization and the rise of civil society.
