תרגום החל עם הווצרותן של שפות, אך היסטוריה של התרגום החלה להיכתב רק בעת האחרונה, ורק במקוטע. הקורס יעלה נקודות ציון חשובות בתחום: מפעלי תרגום מרכזיים, אסכולות ומתרגמים מפורסמים, ויתמקד בתפקידם של מתרגמים כממציאי כתב, כמפתחי שפות וספרויות לאומיות, כמפיצי דת וידע, כשותפים לשררה, ככותבי מילונים – כעושי היסטוריה. חלקו הראשון של הקורס יעסוק בתולדות התרגום בעולם וחלקו השני בתולדות התרגום לעברית. הדיון יבקש לעמוד על חשיבות התרגום ביצירתן של שפות ותרבויות.
Course description
Translation began with the creation of language, but the history of translation is a recent, fragmented creation. The course will point out important milestones: major translation operations, schools, and famous translators, and focus on the role played by translators as inventors of writing, developers of national languages and literatures, disseminators of religion and knowledge, partakers of rulership, writers of dictionaries – as makers of history. The first part of the course will be dedicated to the worldwide history of translation, and the second part to that of translation into Hebrew, both concentrating on the role of translation in the creation of languages and cultures.
