תיאור הקורס:
הקורס הינו קורס מבוא בסיסי לסטטיסטיקה, המיועד לבלשנים. בקורס נציג מושגים יסודיים בתחום הסטטיסטיקה התיאורית וההיסקית, נראה דרכים שונות שבהן בלשנים יכולים להיעזר בכלים סטטיסטיים, נכיר מספר מבחנים סטטיסטיים חשובים ונבין כיצד בוחרים במבחן המתאים למחקר מסוים.
הדוגמאות והתרגילים בקורס יכילו נתונים הלקוחים מתחומי הבלשנות השונים: רכישת שפה ראשונה ושניה, פונטיקה, תחביר, פסיכובלשנות, נוירובלשנות ועוד.
ההשתתפות בקורס זה ובקורס ההמשך (סטטיסטיקה למתקדמים) מומלצת לכל סטודנט/ית לתואר ראשון או שני המתכננ/ת לערוך מחקר בלשני הדורש ניתוח כמותי-סטטיסטי.
מטרות הקורס:
א. לאפשר לסטודנטים להבין ולהעריך מאמרים בבלשנות המכילים ניתוחים סטטיסטיים.
ב. להציג לסטודנטים את היישומים האפשריים של שיטות סטטיסטיות בעבודתם, לספק להם את הכלים והידע כדי לבצע ניתוח סטטיסטי של ממצאי מחקר בלשני ניסויי, וכן את המידע הדרוש כדי לנהל דיון מועיל עם סטטיסטיקאי לשם עריכת מבחנים סטטיסטיים שלא נלמד בקורס זה.

Statistics for Linguists
Fall Semester
Course description:
This course is an introductory course in statistics, aimed at linguists. During the course we will present some fundamental concepts in the fields of descriptive and inferential statistics, see different ways in which linguists can make use of statistical tools, introduce some important statistical tests, and understand how to select the appropriate test for a certain research.
The examples and exercises in the course all contain data taken from the various disciplines of linguistics: First and second language acquisition, phonetics, syntax, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, etc.
Participation in this course and the following one (Advanced Statistics) is highly recommended to any student who plans to conduct a quantitative research in linguistics.
Course objectives:
a. To enable students to evaluate papers in linguistics which contain statistical analyses.
b. To make students aware of the potential applications of statistical methods in their own work, provide them with the tools needed to analyze the results of an experimental linguistic study, and the information necessary to engage in an efficient discussion with a statistician in order to conduct statistical analyses which are not taught in this course.
