Elective course
1 course unit
The course introduces students to the historical, economic, cultural, ideological, social, and geopolitical environment of China, and its evolution during China’s rise to global prominence. This serves as a background against which the business repercussions of a global business environment in which China is a major player are covered and discussed. We review various elements in the Chinese business environment, including, but not limited to, China’s “market Socialism”, the different types of business enterprise, the role role of the central and local government in the economy, corporate governance, and the like. In particular, we focus on China’s interface with the rest of the world, including its inward and outward foreign direct investment and the challenges and opportunities faced by world firms in their role as investors, investment targets, customer, suppliers, and competitors of Chinese firms.
