Working memory is a temporary buffer that holds information in an online state, ready to be accessed by high cognitive functions. In spite of its limited storage capacity (can only hold between 3 to 4 objects), individual differences in working memory capacity correlates with many important capabilities, such as fluid intelligence, scholastic aptitudes and attentional control. In the seminar, we will cover the different working memory models, and how they explain the origin of individual differences in its capacity. We will discuss how to measure working memory capacity and why it correlates with behavior in so many important ways. We will study both verbal and visual working memory with an emphasis on the latter. During the seminar, students will engage in active research on one of the discussed topics.
