Materials and there applications in methods of construction are essential elements of architectural design. This introduction course provides the basics for a professional-level understanding of materials and methods of construction, as well as some technical information necessary for making contemporary buildings. Mechanical, physical and chemical properties of materials are controlled by the micro-scale to the atomic-level structure of the material. The applications and performance of materials are illustrated with many photographs of well-known architectural examples. Considerations of internationally acclaimed architects (e.g., Frank Gehry and Shigeru Ben) in selecting specific materials for constructions are demonstrated. Topics include the make of buildings, stone and concrete construction, steel frame construction, engineered wood design, glass and glazing, designing cladding systems, selecting interior finishes, building integrity, climate considerations, visual considerations, acoustics, mechanical behavior of materials, thermal properties of materials and structures (i.e., thermal insulation, heat transfer and thermal expansion).
