Since the first season of the US version of Survivor had its television debut in the year 2000, American television and later, Israeli too, experienced an explosion of Reality TV programmes. As part of the discussion on the place television occupies in contemporary society and culture, this course turns its spotlight onto this infamous genre and will overview its history until present day when some voices are already arguing its decline has begun, at least in the United States. During the course of the semester, we will be profiling the genre itself and its diverse programmes; all of which fall under the one umbrella term of ' Reality.' In the process, we will be addressing the fact (on par with current studies) that part of the genre's strength lies in its ability to elude definition and that its programmes are in reality, far from one-dimensional. Throughout the course we will delve into Reality TV-related studies and theories, accompanied by references and examples from various programmes (e.g. Supper Nanny, Mekhubarot, Big Brother, Survivor and so on.) We will study and analyse all of these test cases and many more towards promoting an in-depth discussion of all that which is dismissed, deemed crass and looked down upon in Western society and culture in general, and in Israel in particular
