This seminar for MA students in television studies discusses representations of gender, ethnicity, social class, race, and nationality on the American and Israeli TV screens, as well as relevant theory and research thereof.  Such representations in both the Israeli and American cultural settings are examined in their socio-cultural and ideological contexts and provide valuable insights into the cultural agenda and ideological negotiations on each.   The bibliography, which is available mostly with reference to American television, will provide us with theoretical insights and research methods of such representations on American TV in their local, historical and cultural contexts. We shall apply some of these theoretical insights and cultural interpretations to the Israeli context, based on the assumption that both television cultures construct and articulate the struggle over socio-cultural meanings, power relations and identity politics in both the multicultural American and Israeli contexts. The interpretive -comparative analysis of American and Israeli sitcoms, talk shows, dramas, TV commercials and reality television offers socio- historical and aesthetic views of transitions and social processes in the negotiations of gender, ethnicity, social class, race, nationality and gender in both television cultures-American and Israeli. In addition, applying theoretical and interpretive discussions of representations of ethnicity and gender on the American screen to the Israeli context, will enable us to study theoretical models and the applicability thereof to the Israeli texts and contexts.
