Syllabus. TAU lighting course, 13 meetings, two hours each.

The course will center in the understanding of light analysis for cinematic purposes and the practical use of this understanding to create believable images.

Points 1 to 3 need no equipment.

Points 4 to 6 need equipment in the class.

Points 7 to 9 need equipment and are preferably given on location, to be decided.

Point 10 needs equipment and is preferably given on a rental house.

Points 11 to 13 are in the class and need no equipment.

    1) Short history of the need for lighting in cinema. Changing solutions to changing problems and changing techniques; esthetic and cinematic grammar consequences.  Appreciation of light, human vision and camera vision.

    2) Parameters of a light beam.  Intensity, colour,  angle, softness/hardness. Interplay between light beams, lighting.

    3) Lighting strategies in cinema. Imagination-based lighting, Observation-based lighting, Impression-based lighting.

    4&5) The lighting arsenal.

    6) Basic mechanics and electricity.

    7) Exterior and interior day, strategies.

    8) Exterior night, strategies.

    9) Interior night, strategies.

    10) Studio, greenscreen, mall, vehicle; strategies.

    11) The lighting process, its place in the set. Vertical and horizontal working/creative relations.

    12) Lighting economics.

    13) Short seminar on DIY lighting solutions.
