The course deals with the study of musical cognition from an ethnomusicological approach. We will discuss questions concerning the universal and cultural specificity of different musical phenomena, and theories of perception and cognition that place the relationship between the body and the environment at their center. We will deal with cognitive processes related to the creation, learning, conceptualization, recollection, reconstruction and improvisation in different cultures, as well as the sensorimotor processes associated with the production and synchronization of rhythm. During the course we will discuss studies conducted in the laboratory based on methodologies that use synthetic musical examples, but also research based on live performance and ethnography of real-time musical situations and consider the disadvantages and advantages of each approach. As part of the focus on performing musicians, we will discuss the unique cognitive skills of musicians, including interaction between musicians, distributed memory, perception and physical memory, and the extent to which these abilities can be converted to other fields of activity or restricted to musical experitiese.
