תיאור הקורס:

קורס זה, בהמשך לקורס שניתן בסמסטר א', סוקר שאלות יסוד, שיטות מחקר, וממצאים מרכזיים במחקר האמפירי של תפיסה וקוגניציה מוזיקאלית, תוך הכרת המנגנונים המוחיים המתווכים פעילויות מורכבות אלו ושיטות המחקר של מנגנונים אלו. ננסה להבין מה מלמד אותנו מחקר ניסויי בפסיכולוגיה קוגניטיבית ובמדעי המוח על האזנה וביצוע מוזיקלי, ונבחן כיווני מחקר העושים שימוש בידע זה לצרכי טיפול. קורס ההמשך יעסוק  בתפיסת המבנה המוזיקאלי, בקשרי מוזיקה ורגש, במה שמקשר ומפריד מוזיקה ושפה, ובתפקידיהם של קשרים בין-חושיים בתפיסה מוזיקאלית.

זהו קורס משותף לתלמידי בית הספר למוזיקה ע"ש בוכמן-מהטה ובי"ס סגול למדעי המוח, קבוצות שרקען האקדמי שונה. כדי לגשר על הפערים בין שתי הקבוצות ישולבו בקורס שיעורי השלמה, שיעניקו לתלמידי ביה"ס למדעי המוח (ולתלמידים אחרים שאינם מוזיקאים) מצע הכרחי בתיאוריה מוזיקאלית, ולתלמידי ביה"ס למוזיקה -- רקע בסיסי בחקר המוח.

Course Description:

This course, which continues the course The musical Experience (A) presented in the 1^st semester, introduces themes, research questions, and research methods in current empirical studies of music perception and cognition, while presenting neuroscientific research concerning the neural mechanisms underlying these highly complex activities. The course investigates what cognitive psychology and neuroscience reveal about music listening, performance and composition, and how such understanding can be utilized in therapy. Topics of the 2^nd semester course include the cognition of musical structure, music and emotion, music and language, and music and cross-modal interaction.

The course will serve both music and neuroscience students. The two groups will separately attend complementary classes, introducing basic notions in music theory to neuroscience students, and neuroscientific fundamentals to music students.

Course requirements: Active participation in classes, listening, reading and writing assignments, final examination.

יתקבלו תלמידים אשר עמדו בהצלחה את הקורס "החוויה המוסיקאלית א'", שיינתן בסמסטר א'. תלמידים אחרים בעלי רקע מתאים יתקבלו באישור המרצים.

Enrollment requirements: Students should complete the course “The musical experience (1)”, presented in the 1st semester. Other students with appropriate background may also attend, given the lecturers’ approval.

נושאי הקורס:

שיעורים 1-2 -- מבוא והצגת הקורס. השלמות בתיאוריה מוזיקאלית (לתלמידי מדעי המוח) ובנוירופיזיולוגיה (לתלמידי מוזיקה).

שיעורים 3-4 – הזיכרון המוזיקאלי: מגבלות זיכרון העבודה האודיטורי והשלכותיהן על המבנה המוזיקאלי; זיכרון לטווח רחוק במוזיקה: מה אפשר לזכור?

שיעורים 5-7 – תפיסה וקוגניציה של המבנה המוזיקאלי: תיאוריה מוזיקאלית במבחן.

שיעורים 8-9 - מוזיקה ורגש: כיצד מוזיקה מעוררת ומבטאת רגשות.

שיעורים 11-10 -- מוזיקה ושפה: האם מוזיקה היא  שפה, ואם כן – למה לא? פרוזודיה, תחביר ומשמעות.

שיעור 12 – קשרים בין החושים ומשמעויות המוזיקה: כיצד נוצרות אנלוגיות בין מרכיבים מוזיקאליים לבין היבטים של ראייה, תנועה, חישה, ריח וטעם, ואיזה תפקיד עשוי להיות לאנלוגיות אלו  בהבניית המשמעות המוזיקאלית.

שיעור 13 – סיכום; דיון  בשאלות  שלא נחקרו.

Course topics:

1^st and 2^nd classes – A survey of the course’s topics; Background in music theory (for neuroscience students) and neuroscience (for music students).

3^rd and 4^th classes – Music and memory. Constraints of auditory working memory and their ramifications for music; Long-term memory in music: what is possible and impossible to remember.

5^th to 7^th classes – Perceiving musical structure: a test for music theory and analysis.

8^th and 9^th classes – Music and emotion: how music evokes and represents emotion.

10^th and 11^th classes – Music and language: Is music a language, and if it is – why not? Comparing prosody, syntax, and reference in music and language.

12^th class – Music and cross-modal relationships.

13^th class – Summary and a discussion of open issues.
