Annual, 2019-2020

Exercise: 4 Credits

Prerequisites

Successful completion of the course “Ear Training and Sight-Singing I”.

Course description

The course is a sequel to Ear Training and Sight-Singing I. In this course, students will deepen their knowledge and further the training of musical memory, including identification from hearing and dictations of musical patterns pertaining to late 18th and 19th century music (culminating in chromatic harmony). We will further examine chords used mainly at the beginning of the 20th century and even deal a little with atonal music (by dictations, and sight-singing of atonal lines). The course will also include singing tonal music using G, F, C alto and tenor clefs – familiarizing students with viola and cello clefs. Another issue to be trained is singing lines for instruments written in transposition. By the middle of the 2nd semester we will proceed to work on error recognition.

Course grade

Homework and active participation – 30%

Monthly tests – 20%

Final written examination – 30%

Final oral examination 20%

Course requirements

Full attendance and active participation in class is obligatory. Regular submission of homework (dictations and singing material). Written and oral tests take place on a monthly basis, covering the material learned. An extensive written and oral examination will take place at the end of the course.

Course topics

At the beginning of the year we will revise all material from the 1st year. We will continue by singing complex major and minor scales (with 5-7 accidentals) including their respective arpeggios, dominant 7th chords and their inversions, dominant 9th chords and their inversions and dominant 13-7-chords (every lesson deals with a different scale). We will proceed by singing harmonic progressions relating to the lesson's scale as well sight-singing musical excerpts in this scale, and writing dictations in one and two voices. Finally we will address error recognition.

1) Singing and identifying 7th chords and their inversions in the closed and open positions.

2) 4ths and 5ths-based four-pitch chords.

3) 9th chords – mainly the dominant 9th chord.

4) Harmonic progressions with secondary dominants and chords such as the Neapolitan, Italian, French and German chords.

5) Singing and writing transpositions – singing orchestral lines for transposed instruments.

6) Singing and writing in G, F and C clefs (viola, cello).

7) Training rhythm by singing and tapping.

8) Melodic dictations in one – two parts. Completion of missing notes as well as error recognition and correction.

9) Identification and dictations of four-pitch clusters.

10) By the end of the year we will deal briefly with atonal melodic lines (singing and melodic dictations).

11) Emphasis will be placed on dictations played not only by piano, but also using a large variety of orchestral instruments.

Expected learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be familiar with 19th century harmony and will be able to sight-read and sight-sing chromatic music, identify harmonic progressions of the Romantic period. Students will also be able to sing and recognize music lines in C clefs (tenor and alto), and sing and write lines for transposed instruments. Internal hearing will be developed as well.

Students will be able to recognize and interpret rhythms derived from modern music, as well as romantic music. Students will also be able to play, sing and understand chromatic music and modern styles, as well as atonal 20th century music. Training error correction contributes to the sharpening of aural perception. The development of all the above mentioned skills contributes to a better understanding of music theoretical issues, thus creating a synergic and natural linkage among the various aspects of musicianship and musical performance
