Annual, 2017-2018

Exercise: 4 Credits

Course description

The course is aimed at developing the hearing of melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic lines in tonal music. The course also emphasizes the development of musical memory and the connection between sight-reading, sight-singing and internal hearing.

That goal is implemented by sight-singing, identification of chords and dictations. In order to achieve these goals, the course covers all the basic elements of the music language, such as intervals, scales, modes, chords, chord progressions, as well as one-part and two-part dictations.

Course topics

1) Intervals – singing and identifying – first slowly and separately, then in a faster tempo and in succession of 2-3 intervals – in order to develop musical memory. The intervals should be sung upwards and downwards, and are then embedded into scales (in every lesson, a different scales is treated).

2) Scales – major, minor (natural, harmonic, and melodic). Modes – Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian and Locrian. All this is done by singing, identification of scales/modes and written dictations.

3) Chords – triads and inversions and 7th chords in root positions and inversions. This material is also trained by singing broken chords in both directions, dictations (slowly, and then faster and in succession). Connecting these chords to major and minor scales. First, the closed position is thoroughly established, then we move on to the open position.

4) Harmonic dictations, including triads and their inversions, as well as 7th chords (including inversions of the dominant 7th chord) – all this in relation to specific scales.

5) Melodic dictations, melodies of 4-16 bars (one part). Two-part dictations.

6) Rhythmic dictations – to be tapped and sung, separately and together.

7) Sight-singing: The course concentrates on developing the sight-singing skills (Prima vista). This is achieved by reading and singing exercises and pieces taken from Western music literature. Internal hearing is additionally trained by omitting certain notes or even entire bars. Every lesson concentrates on a different scale. The singing can be done with or without accompaniment.

8) Emphasis is also placed on singing in transposition, rhythmical precision and exact intonation.

Expected learning outcomes

The purpose of the course is, primarily, to teach students to identify and write down elements of tonal music from hearing. By using various sound sources, the student develops his or her hearing with regard to different colors. By the end of the course, students will have substantially developed all relevant skills, including internal hearing. Musical memory of tonal melodic lines and harmonic progressions is developed as well. The training of sight-reading, sight-singing and rhythm will naturally lead the student to develop a sense for improvisation as well. Additional exercises in transposition will help him or her in the course's 2nd year to deal with issues of score reading and orchestral notation. The development of all the above mentioned skills contributes to a better understanding of music theoretical issues, thus creating a synergic and natural linkage among the various aspects of musicianship and musical performance
