בקורס נכיר את התפתחות הסגנונות המוזיקליים, מושגי התקינות והיעדים האסתטיים של המוזיקה החל מאמצע המאה השש עשרה ועד אמצע המאה השמונה עשרה.

Syllabus

The course offers a survey of the evolution of musical genres and style during the so called late Renaissance and Baroque periods. Special emphasis will be given to notions of musical correctness and to the esthetics ideals which informed music making in the period in question.

המשבר התרבותי במאה השש עשרה, מחשבת המוזיקה במאה השש עשרה, התפתחות השפה המוזיקלית, סוגיות במוזיקה החד קולית הדתית, סוגיות במוזיקה החד קולית החילונית, הולדת האופרה, המונודיה והסגנון החדש, הבארוק במוזיקה, צורות אינסטרומנטאליות בבארוק, צורות קוליות בבארוק, הזר והמוזר במוזיקת הבארוק, סקרלטי, ויולדיֿ הנדל ובאך, הבארוק הצרפתי.

Course Requirements:

Attendance, active participation in class, written assignments, weekly reading, final examination.

Course Topics:

The cultural crisis of the 16th century: Humanism, Reformations, Scientific shifts.

The problem of styles during the Baroque period.

The interconnections between sacred and secular music.

Music and Theatre.

The transition from modality to tonality.

Baroque aesthetic ideals and unique notion of correctness.

Expected learning outcomes:

Students will become familiar with the special musical idioms of late Renaissance and Baroque music, with the interconnection of styles and genres, with the fundamental principle of change, motion and variation as governing the principle of composing music and making music. Students will understand the impact of Humanism, Reformations and Scientific shifts on the field of music.
