The course will examine the way in which classicism and romanticism are combined in the symphonies of Robert Schumann. Shcumann is a major figure in the romantic movement and is well-known for the novelty in his use of form, harmony rhythm and expression. On the other hand, we can trace the great influence of baroque and classical ideas. The combination of romantic and classical ideas is demonstrated in his 4 symphonies and contributes to their originality of musical ideas and expression.

70% final exam; 30% class participation
Course subjects
The lessons will deal with the different influences and ideas ,which build each movement of the 4 symphonies of Schumann- Baroque and Classical ides, romantic post-Beethovenian ideas, and the influence of other musical genres.
Bibliography
The scores will serve as the course's textbook.
