The course examines the classical symphony as a flexible framework.
This idea is clearly demonstrated in the symphonies of Joseph Haydn which encompass the various types of the classical symphony.
The course will introduce the symphonic idea as a model which allows significant flexibility regarding the various musical elements and emotional content.

Each lesson will deal with a different type of symphony, define its characteristics and examine the ways in which a certain idea may appear in different symphonies.
