Course description
The purpose of the course is to clarify the technical and methodical foundations of teaching violin and viola. Pedagogical repertoire for both instruments will be discussed, as well as technical and musical aspects.

The first year of the two will focus on the early stages of playing, looking at technical and musical elements, as well as different instructional books suited for this level. It focuses on Individual lessons, but treats group lessons as well in terms of repertoire. Technical, musical and pedagogical aspects of teaching are presented.

Course Description:
 
The purpose of the course is to clarify the technical and methodical foundations of teaching violin and viola. Pedagogical repertoire for both instruments will be discussed, as well as technical and musical aspects.
 
The first year of the two will focus on the early stages of playing, looking at technical and musical elements, as well as different instructional books suited for this level. It focuses on Individual lessons, but treats group lessons as well in terms of repertoire. Technical, musical and pedagogical aspects of teaching are presented.
 
 
Course Grade:
 
50% active participation, 25% written assignments, 25% final paper.
 
 
Requirements:
Active participation in each lesson, including individual lessons given in front of other students. Written assignments and in-class exercises; knowledge of pedagogical repertoire for violin and viola.
 
Topics:
1. From thehe early stages of playing – introducing the violin/viola and bow to the young/adult beginner, treating technical and musical elements as well as body relaxation. Basic knowledge of reading music and rhythm.
2. The difference between individual lessons and group lessons.
3. Pedagogical repertoire for both instruments, and its relevance for different levels of playing.
4. The young beginner versus the adult beginner.
5. Different schools and methods in historical retrospective.
6. Sight reading and promoting independence as for practicing at home.
7. Teaching musicality and stylistic awareness.
 
Bibliography:
A list of pedagogical repertoire presented by the lecturer and the students will be given each semester.
