Course description

The course will focus on the development of Western music between the years 1600-1900 (Bass-based counterpoint of the Baroque, Galant/Classic and Romantic styles).

Course topics & requirements:

 

Semester 1. The basso continuo period (Baroque style) 1600-1750)

 

1. The development of the Baroque style.

 

     1.1. The emergence of the bass-based counterpoint since the end of the 16th century.

     1.2. The new styles: the basso continuo, the monody, the concertato principle.

     1.3. The evolution of the madrigalism toward the "seconda pratica" of Monteverdi. The aesthetics of the Baroque music.

     1.4. The multiple compositional techniques in the 17th century, the coexistence of the old codified counterpoint and the new non-codified one. Codification of the new style.

     1.5. The emergence of the opera.

 

2. The Italian music of the first half of the 17th century

 

     2.1. Vocal music.

            Concertato, solo madrigal and motet.

            Early opera.

             Recitative and aria.

            Other vocal genres: the sacred concerto, the oratorio and the cantata.

            Italian passaggi.

            Italian style outside Italy: Germany.

 

     2.2. The instrumental music.

            Instruments.

            Continuation of existing genres.

            New genres of chamber and solo music - sonata, ricercar, toccata etc.

            Mean-tone temperament with pure thirds. The national lute and keyboard tablatures; the Italian partitura.

 

 

3. The French Baroque

 

     3.1. Italian versus French style.

     3.2.General characteristics of the French styles: Tempos, dance patterns, notes inégales, agréments.

     3.3. French vocal music: Lully and the French opera. Récitative simple and mésuré. Air. The ballet. The French cantata. The music for the Church.

     3.4. The French instrumental music. The suite. The instrumental embellishments.

 

4. The Italian music at the end of the 17th century. The new tonality.

 

     4.1. The standartization of the vocal genres. Aria da capo.

     4.2. The new genres of the instrumental music. Trio- and solo sonata. Sonata da chiesa and da camera. The new concerto. Concerto grosso (da chiesa and da camera). Concerto solo.

     4.3. The Italian performance practice. The passaggi. The new style of the performance of the Italian basso continuo.

 

5. The later French music and the music in the countries under the double (Italian and French) influence.

 

     5.1. Rameau. Couperin. The French organists.

     5.2. The search for the unification of the styles. Muffat.

     5.3. The music in England and in Germany.

     5.4. The Lutheran church music: vocal (sacred concerto) and instrumental (the German organ school)

 

6. The music of J.S.Bach and G.F.Handel as the representatives of the late Baroque composing in the mixed style.

 

Semester 2. The tonal harmony period (Galant and Romantic style 1730-1890)

 

1. The inner unity of the 18th and 19th century music. Critique of the labels "baroque", "pre-classical", "classical", "romantic".

 

2. The emergence of the mixed international "galant" style and the modern forms of the concert life. The characteristic features of the galant style.

 

3. The Italian opera of the 18th century. Opera seria and opera buffa. Aria da capo. Finale.

 

4. The opera reform. Gluck.

 

5. The instrumental music. The symphony. The sonata form. The classical concerto. The string quartet. The gradual disappearance of the basso continuo.

 

6. The Viennese school. Haydn - Mozart - Haydn.

 

7. Beethoven and the music of the 19th century.

 

8. The Romanticism. The "protagonist" principle as the evolving common base of both the "absolute" and the "programmatic" music of the 19th century. The new orientation of the compositional theory. The new economic base of music  making.

 

9. The new Italian opera. "Scena ed aria" and other structural conventions. Verdi.

 

10. The French opera tradition. The German song and the German romantic opera.

 

11. The new prominence of the instrumental music. The first phase of the symphony after Beethoven. Berlioz. The rise of the piano. New genres of the instrumental music: the characteristic piece, the overture, etc.

 

12. "Program" versus "absolute". The "new German school".

 

13. The symphonic principle. The music drama of Wagner. Liszt and the symphonic poem. The second wave of symphony. Brahms..

 

14. The new national schools. The Russians. The transformation of the tonality.

 

15. The European music by the end of the 19th century.

 

There is a written final test after each semester.

  • Getting acquainted with the main musical repertoire during the common practice between the years 1600-1900.
  • Getting acquainted with the characteristics of the varied styles during the common practice and learning to distinguish between them.
  • Mastering the history of those periods, including becoming familiar with the main composers of those period and representative musical works, the relevant musical genres and forms, the development of musical instruments and relevant issues in performance practice and interpretation.
