Study of composers and their music who were born and raised, or spent a significant amount of creative and/or formative time in New York and became part of its musical fabric. A study of the composers' lives, music and how their living in New York fits into the historical perspective. The question of why so many of these artists moved to New York will be addressed. Composers to be studied include, Dvorak, Mahler, Rachmaninov, Ives, Varese, Stravinsky, Gershwin, Ives, Weill, Barber, Bernstein, Babbitt, Carter, Copland, Cage, Piazolla---up to modern day composers such as Corigliano, Reich, Michael Gordon, etc.
