Short syllabus

The course covers the history of Western music from its beginnings to the first half of the 18th century. The topics of the first semester are:

The sources of Western music, the chant of the Church, the rise of the polyphony, the music of the 13th century (Notre-Dame school and the early motet), the music of the 14th century (Ars nova, Italian music and Ars subtilior), the Renaissance music (English and Burgundian schools, the Franco-Flemish school, the rise of instrumental music, Palestrina, Lasso, Victoria, the Venetian school, the madrigal). The second semester will cover the 17th and the beginning of the 18th century:

Prima pratica and seconda pratica, the thoroughbass and the concertato medium, emerging of the “modern” musical language, the rise of the Italian opera and its further development, the Protestant music, instrumental music of the South and the North, the French Baroque, the late Italian music and the rise of the concerto, J.S. Bach and G.F. Handel.

 The Renaissance: The English and the Burgundian school: new counterpoint, Dunstaple, Dufay, Binchois.

 The Franco-Flemish school.

 The late 16th century Catholic vocal polyphony.

 The Protestant polyphony.

 The secular polyphony of the 16th century.: The madrigal.

 The instrumental music of the 16th century: Instruments, genres, the notations, the performance)

 

 

 

Expected learning outcomes

 

 Mastering the history of Western music in these periods.

 Becoming familiar with the main composers of these periods and the representative musical works, the relevant musical genres and forms and relevant issues in performance practice.
