Syllabus

The course will focus on the study of various topics in brass performance practice and ensemble playing.

קריאה והכרה של רפרטואר מוזיקה קאמרית לכלי מתכת, הכנת מוזיקה קאמרית לביצוע בקונצרטים, האחדה של אופן הנגינה בין המשתתפים (תחילת צלילים, אינטונציה, סגנון), הכנת אודיציות לתזמורות, לימוד יצירות חשובות לכלי מתכת ברפרטואר הסימפוני, שיגרת אימונים ושמירה על כושר נגינה, ציוד עזר לכלי מתכת, נשימה נכונה ותמיכה.

Workshop: 4 Credits

Course Description

The course is comprised of four parts, equal in importance:

1. Repertoire reading of orchestral material
2. Preparation for end of semester concert
3. Participation in mock auditions
4. Participation and active discussion of Business of Music topics including guest lecturers

    

   Course requirements and grading

• Regular attendance and active participation in classes;
• Developing transposition and sight reading skills;
• Preparation for auditions;
• Workshop projects and final concerts.

Course topics

1. Weekly repertoire reading of major orchestral works and excerpts.

    Pieces read include:

   1. Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition
   2. Mahler: Symphonies 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7
   3. Strauss: Till Eulenspiegel, Don Juan, Alpine Symphony, Don          

                    Quixote, Symphonia Domestica

   4. Sibelius: Symphony #2
   5. Dvorak: Symphony #9
   6. Wagner: Ride of the Valkyries
   7. Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade
   8. Ravel: Daphnis and Chloe
   9. Bruckner: Symphony #4
   10. Holst: The Planets
   11. Hindemith: Mathis der Maler
   12. Wagner: Tannhauser
   13. Stravinsky: Rites of Spring
2. Three classes in each semester are devoted to the preparation towards the end of term concert.
3. Preparation of auditions and active participation in judging "mock auditions" – including discussions, evaluation and analysis of peer-auditions.

1. Guest lecturers on brass and orchestra-related topics, including:

   Score reading, Brass arranging, Copyright and Royalty distribution, Managing and orchestra, Audition preparation, Performance preparation, Low brass role, independent CD production, etc.

   Expected learning outcomes

   The students will develop basic skills required from brass players, both as individuals and ensemble members. After four years of active participation in the workshop, the students will be ready for professional level challenges in orchestras as well as in other contexts.
