 סילבוס
מטרת הקורס היא לימוד כללי הכתיבה האקדמית והקניית המיומנויות הנדרשות לכתיבה אקדמית נכונה. במהלך הקורס יידרשו הסטודנטים לקרוא ולנתח מאמרים אקדמיים ולהתנסות בתהליך הכתיבה עצמו.

מיומנויות יסוד שתלמדנה במהלך הקורס הן:

• ניסוח שאלת המחקר כבסיס לכתיבה מחקרית
• מקורות אקדמיים – מקורות ראשוניים ומקורות משניים, איתור הביבליוגרפיה הרלוונטית, מקורות כתובים מול מקורות מקוונים, מקורות לגיטימיים, כתיבת מראי מקום וכתיבת ביבליוגרפיה על פי הכללים המקובלים
• שיטות מחקר במוזיקולוגיה – ניתוח מקורות עיוניים, ניתוח יצירות, שילוב בין מוזיקולוגיה לשדות מחקר אחרים
•  סוגי מאמרים ומקורות אקדמיים נוספים – מאמר סקירה מול מאמר עמדה, קבצי מאמרים, דיסרטציות, סדרות מחקריות ועוד
• קריאה ביקורתית – זיהוי עמדת הכותב וטיעוניו, הבעת עמדה במאמר אקדמי
• תהליך כתיבת העבודה – שילוב מקורות, בניית שלד וריבוד החומר, סדר כתיבת הפרקים, חשיבות המבוא והסיכום, החלוקה ההירארכית בגוף העבודה האקדמית
• תהליך יצירת פסקאות ושרשורן
• כללי התחביר וכללי הניסוח בכתיבה האקדמית
• היבטים גרפיים בעבודה אקדמית – הקפדה על כותרות זהות ומיושרות, שילוב דוגמאות תווים בטקסט הכתוב, יישור הטקסט ועוד

 Course description

The course will prepare the students and will provide them with the basic principles and skills required for academic writing focusing on the rationale, structure and requirements needed for writing an academic paper. The studies combine critical reading of academic sources as well as writing parts of an academic paper. Issues such as defining and developing a research question, conducting a comprehensive study using written and electronic sources and developing academic writing skills will be addressed. The course is based on reading and analyzing academic papers as well as in-class and home practice.

 The following main issues of the academic writing will be addressed:

• The importance of phrasing the research question.
• Academic sources – Primary and Secondary sources, hard copy and on-line sources, legitimate sources in the academic world and the proper way of writing references and bibliography.
•  Methods of research in Musicology – analyzing written sources, music analysis, combining methods and more
•   Types of academic documents – informative articles, encyclopedic articles, dissertations, articles collections etc.
• Critical reading and critical writing – the author opinion, writing arguments for and against, making a point in academic writing.
• The process of writing – combining material from several sources, the importance of a proper introduction, writing the conclusions, the hierarchical structure of the body of work and the proper order of writing an academic work
• Writing connected paragraphs
• Graphical aspects of an academic work – writing titles, combining score examples

1. Characteristics of academic writing.
2. Primary and secondary sources; written and electronic sources; legitimate and illegitimate sources; music and musicology search engines; an introduction to the music collections of TAU libraries.
3. The Invention stage - defining a research question.
4. An introduction to musicological fields of research and research methods.
5. The outline and the final structure of an academic paper.
6. The reading and writing process: analyzing informative and viewpoint articles; the difference between quotation and paraphrase; reading and synthesizing several sources.
7. The goals and the structure of the Introduction part.
8. The goals and the structure of the Conclusions part.
9. Citations formatting (Chicago – Turabian) and the Work Cited page.
10. Language and grammar: the paragraph structure; the sentence structure; formal versus informal language.
11. Revising an essay.

 By the end of the course students will develop advanced reading and writing skills that will enable them to write an essay according to academic requirements. The students will acquire the skill of conducting an academic study. They will be able to define and develop an idea, to locate, read, analyze and cite sources and to arrange the material in a well ordered structure.
