From an early stage western art has developed an intricate language of gestures and expressions, which were used as codes known both to the viewer and to the designer of the work. These gestures were used to identify and characterize the different figures, their meanings, and their function within larger narratives. Different sets of gestures were used to characterize saints as opposed to sinners, as well as royalty, nobility and clergy as opposed to low or popular classes.

Factors influencing the creation of this language were multifold and included liturgy, judicial gesticulation, and the continuation or mutation of previous artistic traditions. Thus developed a visual language which used opposing formal characteristics (such as twisted/straight, left/right, calm/fluctuating) in order to convey moral and symbolic meanings, and which used the portrayal of motion as a central component. The course will study the vast diversity of gestures in western art while examining processes of continuation as well as of change.

Among the subjects discussed will be:
1. Gestures of Sin and Temptation
2. Gestures of sorrow and despair
3. Gestures of rulers
