מידת האוריינות בחברה בתקופת ימי הביניים היא שאלה הנשאלת רבות במרחב המחקר התרבותי, וכדי לענות אליה נדרשת גישה אינטרדיסציפלינרית הנוגעת בשאלות סוציולוגיות, ספרותיות, כלכליות, בשאלות של פטרונות, ובשאלות על היחסים בין הממסד הכנסייתי לשלטון ולעם. רוב השאלות הללו יכולות לזכות להתייחסות שאיננה נוגעת לשאלות אמנותיות פר-סה. יחד עם זאת, ניתוח כתבי היד המאוירים עשוי לחשוף רבדים נוספים המתייחסים לשאלת האוריינות באופן חדש, ולעיתים אף מפתיע, ובמקומות בהם כלי המחקר האחרים הגיעו למבוי סתום. שיעור זה יעמוד על כלי המחקר האינטרדיסציפלינריים, ויראה את האפשרויות הגלומות בניתוח האמנותי של כתבי היד המאוירים על-פי פילוח מגדרי לשדה מחקר האוריינות.

The state of literacy in the Middle Ages is a problematic question, as it should be viewed and analyzed through an interdisciplinary approach, mixing literature, sociological, and economic data with patronageand ecclesiastical interests. Can art history contribute to this field, and in what ways? The course will expose how the analysis of illuminated manuscripts and women studies can participate, enriched and influence the ongoing debate concerning literacy during the Middle Ages.
