בשיעור זה נשחזר את סיפור בנייתה של קהיר מהחשובות והבולטות שבערי העולם המוסלמי, מהקמתה ב- 634 כמצד צבאי (פוסטאט) דרך התפתחותה כ"עיר המנצחת" (אל-קאהרה) בעידן הפאטימי, איובי וממלוכי ועד לשחרורה הסופי מהשלטון הקולוניאלי באמצע המאה העשרים. ננתח את התפתחותה הארכיטקטונית והאורבנית בקונטקסט התרבותי, פוליטי וחברתי בהקשרו המקומי, הים-תיכוני והכלל ערבי.
In this course we shall reconstruct the narrative of the building of Cairo, one of the most prominent and important cities in the Muslim world, from its establishment in 634 as a fustat (military outpost) through its development as al-Qahira (victorious city) in the Fatimid, Ayyubid, and Mamluk Eras, to its final liberation from colonial rule in the mid-twentieth century.
We shall review the city’s architectural and urban development in its cultural, political, social, local, Middle Eastern, and pan-Arab contexts.
