The course examines Israeli photography and video from the 1970s to the contemporary moment. It explores conceptual art from the 1970s and the way it mobilized photography as a form of documentation and readymade imagery. It focuses on the way the local landscape was represented in the 1980s as part of an effort to create a new visual topography and in relation to American photography. We will also address the transformations in the representation of local environments in the 1990s following the emergence of new typological German photography. The course also discusses contemporary performance and video practices in relation to theoretical and critical concepts such as archive, delegated performance and appropriation.
