אמנות חזותית מהווה אמצעי הבעה אנושית. אמנים משתמשים בו כדי לבטא, להעביר ולחקור רעיונות, רגשות וחוויות. האמנות החזותית היא שפה בפני עצמה, בהיותה דרך מרכזית לתקשורת סימבולית. פענוח של יצרות האמנות החזותית מתבסס על שלושה מרכיבים הקשורים זה לזה. ראשית, ניתוח של "הצורה" או מאפייניה הצורניים של היצירה (כגון: קומפוזיציה, צבע, פרספקטיבה), "אופן הייצוג" והמדיום של דימוי חזותי (למשל, ציור, צילום, פיסול, מייצג, אדריכלות). שנית, ניתוח של "אופן" ההבעה החזותית (לדוגמא, "אידיאליזציה", "ריאליזם", "אקספרסיוניזם") ושל "רטוריקה חזותית" (אלגוריה, מטאפורה, סמל, סימן). שלישית, התבוננות ביצירת האמנות בקונטקסטים אסתטיים, אתיים, חברתיים-פוליטיים, ובהתאם לגישות המפרשות את היצירה (למשל, גישה איקונוגרפית, או גישות סוציולוגיות לאמנות). קורס זה מוקדש לפיכך לפיתוח מיומנויות ההתבוננות, הניתוח הצורני והדיון במשמעויות של הדימויים החזותיים.  

Visual art is a means of human expression. Artists use it to express, convey, and explore ideas, emotions, and experiences. Visual art is a language in its own right, being a major way of symbolic communication. Decoding the meanings of works of the visual arts is based on three interrelated components. First, it is an analysis of the form or formal characteristics of the work (such as composition, color, perspective); "mode of representation" and the medium of a visual image (e.g., painting, photography, sculpture, installation, and architecture). The second element is an analysis of the "mode of visual expression" (e.g., "idealism", "realism", "expressionism") and the "visual rhetoric" (allegory, metaphor, symbol, and sign). Thirdly, we look at the work of art in the aesthetic, ethical, socio-political contexts, and according to the approaches that interpret the work (e.g., iconographic approach, or sociological approaches to art). This course is therefore devoted to the development of observation skills, formal analysis and discussion of the meanings of visual images.
