הקורס מבוא לאמנות קלאסית יוון ורומא יסקור באופן כרונולוגי את התפתחות אמנות יוון ורומא מתחילת התקופה ההיסטורית היוונית (בערך שנת 800 לפנה"ס) ועד סוף תקופת שלטון הקיסר קונסטנטין ברומא (337 לספירה). בתקופה ארוכה זו של מעל 1000 שנים גיבשו תרבויות יוון ורומא שפה חזותית, מוטיבים אמנותיים ושיח תאורטי הקשורים קשר אמיץ לחברה שהגתה אותם. אך מעבר להבנת התפתחות האמנות הקלאסית בתוך ההקשר הספציפי שלה אנו מוצאים כי סוגיות בסיסיות שעלו במסגרתה רלוונטיות גם עתה. לפיכך במהלך הסקירה הכרונולוגית יעלו גם סוגיות מרכזיות שנידונו באמנות הקלאסית והמשיכו לעמוד במוקד הדיון במהלך התפתחות תרבות המערב, לדוגמא: הגדרת האנושי, היחס לאלים, היפה והמכוער, הגוף העירום, הגברי והנשי, מעמד האמנות כחיקוי (מימזיס) וכאשליה, התפתחות הדיוקן ביחס למושגי נפש ואישיות, ייצוג נרטיבים באמנות חזותית, ייצוג נוף, אימפריאליות והתפשטות התרבות, התפתחות הבית הפרטי והערים המסודרות, היחס בין האזרח למדינה. בנוסף נזכיר בקצרה גם התפתחויות אמנותיות בשולי התרבות הקלאסית תוך מיקוד המבט על אזור יהודה. מבט זה ישמש כמבוא לבסיס הנוסף (היהודי/נוצרי) של התרבות המערבית שהתפתח באזורינו עם תחילת הספירה הנוצרית.

תיאור הקורס באנגלית

This introduction to Classical Art will outline the chronological development of the arts of Greece and Rome in the Classical period: from the beginning of the historical period in Greece (c. 800 B.C) to the end of the reign of the Emperor Constantine (337 A.D.) During this millennium, a visual art developed within this culture, which was intimately connected to the history and culture of the period. We have termed this "Classical Art", and in doing so have shown that beyond its inherent value, the art and culture of this period is also an intimate part of what we call Western culture which we see ourselves as participating in. Therefore, the introduction will also deal with key issues that developed in classical art, which continue to be of interest to our culture such as: definitions of the human, the relation to the Gods, the status of art as imitation or representation, visual culture and imperialism, the beautiful and the ugly, the status of vision as opposed to language, artistic genres such as landscape and still life etc. We will also briefly mention some developments on the periphery of the classical cultures focusing on Judea as an introduction to the other foundation of Western culture: the Judean-Christian.
