למרות שהתרבות היהודית לא הייתה מעורבת בפעילות תיאטרונית לאורך רוב ההיסטוריה שלה, היא פיתחה שפה פרפורמטיבית מובהקת דרך הטקסים והטקסטים הריטואליים שלה. סמינר זה ינסה לשחזר שפה זו דרך התבוננות בביצוע ההלכתי והריטואלי היהודי מתוך תיאוריות שונות של תיאטרון ופרפורמנס. נתמקד ביום הכיפורים כמקרה מבחן טקסטואלי ופרפורמטיבי ונעקוב אחר הביצועים השונים של חג זה בתרבויות יהודיות לאורך הדורות, עם דגש על ספרות חז"ל. לצד הדיון ביום הכיפורים, נעיין ביצירות תיאטרון ופרפורמנס המפעילות מחדש, מערערות או משבשות את הביצוע ההלכתי, ונבדוק כיצד התחביר הריטואלי מטעין במשמעות את היצירה התיאטרונית. נתוודע לתיאוריות המרכזיות על אודות הזיקות שבין תיאטרון לריטואל (היסטוריוגרפיות, אנתרופולוגיות ופנומנולוגיות), ונשאל כיצד זיקות אלו מחדדות את מערך היחסים המורכב שבין אמנות לדת גם בתרבות העכשווית.

המפגשים ישלבו מחקר עיוני ומעשי, ויתקיימו בחלקם בשיתוף פעולה עם פרופ' ישי רוזן-צבי ותלמידי החוג לפילוסופיה יהודית ותלמוד על מנת ליצור דיאלוג מפרה בין תחומי הידע השונים.

Although Jewish culture was not theatrically active throughout most of its history, it did develop a distinct performative language through its rituals and texts. This seminar will aim at reconstructing this language by analyzing Jewish ritual and halachic praxis with the lens of various performance and theatre theories. We will focus on Yom Kippur as a textual and performative case study, and trace the various enactments of this day’s rituals in Jewish societies throughout history, with an emphasis on rabbinic literature. Alongside the study of Yom Kippur, we will examine several theatre and performance pieces that reactivate, unsettle or disrupt Jewish ritual practice, and ask how the ritual syntax charges theatre with meaning. We will get acquainted with theories regarding the links between theatre and ritual (historiographical, anthropological, and phenomenological) and inquire how they shed light on the complex relations between art and religion in our contemporary culture.

The sessions will combine theoretical and practical research, and will partly take place in collaboration with Prof. Ishay Rosen-Zvi and the students of the department of Jewish Philosophy and Talmud, in order to create a productive conversation between the two disciplines.
