Course description One of the marks of post modernity is the theoretical, practical and moral failure of sovereignty as practiced "inside" and "outside" by modern nation-states. This course attempts to account for the rise and subsequent crisis of modern sovereignty. The course will discuss alternative concepts of sovereignty, such as divided and federal states, and those found in other forms of indirect rule. Regarding territory, selected issues being contested will be addressed, such as, the end of territory, a borderless or, 'flat' world, territory as a device to control and contain people – i.e., territory as an oppressive tool in the hands of the state, territory as a source of (national or ethnic) identity.
