הסמינר יעסוק בתבניות נרטיביות ובאסתטיקה מסורתיות בהן משתמשים יוצרי הקולנוע היפני באופן מודע ולא מודע בסרטים שונים. נבחן סרטים הנובעים ממדיומים אחרים, כגון תיאטרון וספרות, ומיצירות קולנועיות מוקדמות יותר. נעסוק באופני השימוש ביסודות מסורתיים יפניים במרכיבי הסרטים השונים, כגון תכני הנרטיב והמבנה שלו, עיצוב דמויות, ובפיתוח מומנטים דרמטיים ועיצוביים שונים. נבחן מה מסורתי בקולנוע היפני, מחד גיסא, וכיצד היוצר הקולנועי משתמש במסורת, ונותן לה ביטוי אישי ומוסיף לה מימד חדש, מאידך גיסא. נבחן סוגיות אלו בסרטים מתקופותיו השונות של הקולנוע היפני, מסגנונות קולנועיים שונים, גם "סרטים הסטוריים" וגם "סרטים עכשוויים", של מיטב הבמאים היפניים.
Course description
Japanese Cinema: Tradition and Innovation
The seminar engages with the traditional narrative patterns and aesthetics that the creators of Japanese cinema use, either intentionally or unconsciously, in various films. We will examine films originating from other media, such as theatre and literature, and from earlier films. We will relate to the employment of traditional elements in various films, such as in the structure of the narrative content and structure, design of the characters, and elaboration of various dramatic moments. We will examine what is "traditional" in Japanese films, on the one hand, and how the cinematic creator uses this tradition while adding a new personal dimension to it, on the other hand.
We will explore all these issues in films from different periods and of different styles, such as "historical films" and "contemporary films" produced by the leading film directors.
