The seminar engages with various aspects of Japanese classical theatre that are intended to expose the depth, complexity, and universal applicability of this theatre in our contemporary world.

As the basis of the research we will explore the rich theatrical language that has consolidated over the course of hundreds of years in the various genres of the Japanese classical theatre: the aristocratic Noh and Kyogen, the popular Kabuki theatre and the Bunraku puppet theatre.

We will then examine the influence of this theatrical language on two media in modern Japan:  Its influence on the avant-garde theatre that was created during the second half of the twentieth century, in regard to directing and design, and on the training of contemporary actors. We will explore theatrical works by directors such as Ohta, Suzuki, Terayama and Ninagawa. Along with this theatrical exploration, we will examine the influence on the works by film directors of the same period, such as Kurosawa, Mizoguchi, Shinoda and Kitano.
