The Himalayas are highly respected all throughout Asia, and in India in particular. The region is of prime importance: here lay the water sources of billions in Asia; it is a major tourist destination; and it is home to gods, demons, ancient sages and humans alike. The Himalaya is also home to Pahari Hinduism, a unique stream of mountain religion. This course presents various aspects of this fascinating Himalayan Hinduism and the different ways in which it shapes the lives of millions in the region, especially given the social, economic and ecological pressures that have developed in recent decades. Thus, for examples, the course explores village possession rituals, processions and festivals, pilgrimage and tourism, sacred spaces and ecology, rituals of blood sacrifice, and more.
