Korean religions are characterized by a unique combination of local and imported philosophies and practices. Animism and polytheistic belief in the elements of nature and spirits of the dead have consisted the basis of local religions for thousands of years. Buddhism, Daoism, Confucianism, and Christianity arrived to Korea throughout history and intertwined with existing values and norms to create versions of these trans-Asian religious trends. In this manner, monastic life and intense absorption in scholarship exist side by side with supernatural mediation and communication with ancestor spirits through trance dance that culminates in climbing onto sharp blades.

The course explores various trends in Korea’s religious life. We will watch visual depictions of Korean religions, and read (translated) original texts that testify to the richness of Korea’s beliefs and rituals.
