The study of Hinduism is rooted in the study of philosophy, theology and classical texts, an outlook which still serves as the organizing principle of many introductions to this world religion. In recent years, however, increasing numbers of scholars have turned their attention to the study of Hinduism’s everyday living manifestations as well. This course will survey such aspects of Lived Hinduism and touch on topics such as temple rituals and major festivals, the popular practice of pilgrimage, rites of passage, vows, possession and healing, and more. As we will see, the role of these living religious practices in maintaining the cultural, sociopolitical, and economical orders in India, is major.
