In the last two decades we are witnessing the emergence of a new filed of study that focuses on the intersection between religion and popular music studies. Some of the works in this domain centers on topics related to religion in popular culture and music, by means of religious ideas, symbols, metaphors and idioms that appear in forms of popular music and their surrounding cultures. Other studies, discuss music phenomena and popular culture as religion, that is, they examine the way forms of popular music and their surrounding cultures have themselves come to constitute new “religions” or spaces of “religiosity”, which I refer here as “sonic worship”. This course will focus on popular culture and music in Taiwan, and particularly on the way it constitutes new spaces and forms of sonic worships. During the lessons we will observe different music genres, figures and phenomena that took place in Taiwan since the 1960s, and discuss their social and cultural meanings and implications. We shall see, on the one hand, how local idols and divas have influenced the lives of millions of fans and followers in Taiwan and throughout South and East Asia. Then, on the other, we will examine the means by which global musical trends and technologies are implicated within youth culture and urban society in Taiwan. In addition, we will look at (and listen to) the way musical places and spaces, such as, festivals, concerts halls, dance clubs, raves, street performances and soundsacape reflect, and at times create, new social realities, communication channels, collective and individual practices, identities and believes.
