Course description
The poetry of H. N. Bialik existed as a central force in the world of Hebrew literature, its creators and its readers since the 1890s. Its thematic and poetic innovations have shifted Hebrew poetry from the realm of Enlightenment to the world of Romanticism and even to the threshold of Modernism, and had an enormous influence on younger generations of poets. The seminar will examine Bialik's poetry against the poetical-historical background upon which it was created, and will mark its place in relation to the poetry that preceded it and the poetry that followed it. Among the issues for discussion: Bialik's emergence and separation from the norms of 'Hibbat-Zion' poetry; The term 'Bialik Generation' and its boundaries; Bialik's influence on Hebrew poetry in the beginning of the 20th century; Contacts and differentiations between Bialik's poetry and Modernist Hebrew poetry. The seminar will discuss the following poets: M. Z. Mane, M. M. Dulitsky, K. A. Shapira, Shaul Tshernichovsky, Zalman Shneour, Yaakov Fichman, Yaakov Cahan, Yaakov Shteinberg, Yitzhak Katzenelson, David Shimonovitz, David Vogel, U. Z. Greenberg.
