Eat Drink Man Woman: The everyday culture of the first Israelis
This course will examine the cultural repertoires of Jewish Israelis during Israel’s early years. Economic conditions, historical constraints and political developments are the background on which everyday practices, social norms, and mores will be portrayed and analyzed. We will discuss the role of the state in instilling discipline and social values as well as the role of various cultural agents in inculcating the desired cultural practices. The course will explore social and material realities vis-à-vis political rhetoric and national aspirations.
