Course description
From obsidian in the Neolithic people to humans sold into slavery in the early modern times, archeology specializes in documenting distribution patterns of objects/artifacts in time and space. Behind these distribution maps lay sometimes simple in other cases sophisticated systems who indicative of a variety of trading methods and the structure of the ancient economy.
The purpose of the course is to expose the students to the world of ancient economy, that who existed prior to the invention of coins. Geographical and economical theories relating to ancient trade and distribution patterns of objects will be discussed. We will Ask whether market economy existed prior to the Hellenistic period and try and recognize other exchange networks such as redistribution and gift economy. We shall also discuss the relationship between social integration, political centralization and specialized trade .
